Halloween minutes

Happy Halloween Fellow Optimists:

Doug Hoy reported that Jack, Alan and Wally helped move the annex to blockbuster yesterday. He really appreciated all the help.

Wally handed out goodies for everyone, thank you Wally.

Wally attended the District Meeting in Hood River last weekend. Wally said that he learned that we are ahead in the social media aspect of our club compared to many other clubs.

Next Wednesday is the Board Meeting at the PAL Club starting at 6:30pm.

Wally passed around a note pad asking for people to become program chairs in the next 3 months. If your interested in having speakers join us please contact Wally.

Birthday's. Let's see Steve mentioned that his granddaughter was having a birthday. Alan mentioned something about a great aunt having a 90 something birthday. In the club Marv D. and Vern are having birthdays. They opted to let the club sing to them, beings they paid plentifully we belted out a lovely tune.
Last week's raffle winner was Eric S. he gave his winnings to the Dean Mitchell Scholorship Fund. Thanks Eric. This weeks winner was, I never ever win and it's been like 100 years since I last one, Bob P.

Wally talked to Dalton, though he's unable to come to the meetings each Thursday he is still planning to stay involved in the club.

This day in history: Toyota established it's first US business. Alan and many others hadn't heard of the car that Toyota first started selling, the ToyoPet. Here is a link thanks to Wikipedia on the car: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyopet_Master

Wally asked folks to bring in something that they wanted to auction off. So here are the following results of the auction:
Optimist Goody Bag- Jack- $3.50
Maui bag from Susan- Scott- $ 4.50
Unknown Gift-Marv D.- $ 5.00
Police Hat- Bob A. $ 2.50
Reusable Bag with Goody's-Bob P. $ 5.00
Goody from Jack-Vern $ 5.00
Macadamian Nuts that Scott didn't eat- Wally- $ 5.00

Vern had a very short story to share with us regarding macadamian nuts. He said at one time he knew his father in law liked the nut and so Vern went to the store and figured he should try the nuts before giving them to his father in law. He went through about 5 jars before finally getting a bottle to his father in law.

Captain Eric Oathes explained to us a new program their department is working on with the Portland Police Department. Here is what he wrote me earlier today:

We will be assisting the Portland Police in teaching Community Policing Concepts to the Bangladesh police. Officers will be teaching their police forces what community policing is, how to work with the community to solve problems, rather then doing the policing they currently do, which is heavy handed punishing policing.

This is a great opportunity for our officers to better understand what it means to be a minority in a community and to help them be more compassionate and understanding in the way we do our job.

Bob P. went to a free screening of the movie Last Vegas at Bridgeport Theater. Mentioned that it was a very good and very funny movie. He highly recommended it.

Marv T. bought a new RV that required several lessons on how to drive it. Mentioned it had a 100 gallon gas tank in it. The RV is 37 feet long. The thing has 4 TV's. Jack mentioned his only had 2.

Scouts update via Bob A. court of honor happened 2 weeks ago. And since the weather has been so wonderful they of course decided to set out this weekend while the weather is more typical Oregon weather.

See you all next week at the board meeting. Please check out our website at www.beavertonoptimist.webs.com

Until next week bring optimism to those around you.

Optimist Meeting Minutes - October 10

Good evening everyone.
On Thursday it was Tom Baxter's birthday. Happy Birthday Tom, we hope you had a wonderful day.

Hey Joe, everyone wants to know how you are doing?
We had a board meeting on Monday October 7, 2013. Wally made the suggestion that each board member head up a committee to help move our club forward.

Wally will represent us at the Pacific NW District meeting in Hood River.

Wally asked me, Susan, to share a little bit about the braces on my legs. I just got a new AFO, ankle/foot orthotic for my right leg. I have been wearing the one on my left leg for over 2 years now. I explained that these braces are worn because I have drop foot which happens when the lesions in the brain disrupt the signals from my peroneal nerve in the outside of my lower leg. Due to the damage of the mylein sheath in my brain, I no longer can lift my feet up and so I wear the braces that keep my foot/ankle at a 90 degree angle. If you have any other questions I'm happy to talk to you. I did mention I've had MS now for 12 years.

My hope is to run in a 5k last year and will be meeting with an individual in Seattle to see if i can make my dream a reality. Before developing MS I was an avid runner, it's the one thing I miss more then anything. I cannot run in braces I currently wear so the hope is the gentleman in Seattle could help me. Dave suggested I do the Jingle Bell 5K walk in December.

Alan was our secret greeter, he was also still very sick so he forgave me for not shaking his hand as I'm trying to stay well as we are leaving for Hawaii soon. And then he didn't shake Vern's hand because he didn't want to get him sick either. Both of us paid a fine anyways.

Arden Eby passed away. Jack left a message on OregonLive obituaries for his family. Wally did as well.
Eric S. has resigned form CPO6

Doug Hoy joined us today and mentioned that the library is now a year old. He invited our club to celebrate the libraries 1st year of operation.

If you'd like to attend it is on October 20, 2013 from 2:30-5pm at the Blockbuster Video Store.
Address: 17555 SW Farmington Rd. Aloha
There will be food, live music and special guests who will reflect on the past year from 3-4pm.

Raffle winner last week: Steve
Raffle winner this week: Me-Susan

This day in history- Hijacking of the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro reaches a dramatic climax.

See you all this coming week, have a good rest of your weekend.

Notes from July 25

Good Morning everyone,

First and foremost there will be a board meeting on Monday July 29, 2013 at the PAL Club at 6:30pm.

On Saturday from 11-3pm Michael has invited us to his Thai Chi Center out on 22nd & Glisan.  Taoist is the name of the place I do believe he said.  Sorry Michael if I got the named spelled wrong.

We didn't have a speaker today but we had a lot of announcements.

Bob A. mentioned how well the presentation in the park went for our own Vern Williams and his late wife Pat.  He went to the Hillsboro Club this past Tuesday and thanked them for their help.

Jack took the framed presentation piece over to Vern who was deeply appreciative of this and the whole event.  Was still in awe by it all.

I gave an update on Rudy.  He had his annual echo-cardiogram scan for his aneurysm and it has grown to a level where his cardiologist wants him to have surgery within a years time. We have an appointment with a Cardio-Thoracic Valve Sparing Surgeon next Thursday to learn more and figure out when to do the procedure.  It was brought to our attention by a friend of mine that he may not be able to fly to Maui in October with said aneurysm and if that were the case Rudy would have the surgery done now.  If we can fly with it then he likely will wait to do the surgery until January or February next year.  I will give updates when I have them.

Eric S. is better.  There was an event last night up at the Jenkins Estate.  Celebrated $ 40K in grants if I heard that right for the arts.  Eric gave an update on the CPO6 meetings.  August 1, 2013 will be the Tualatin River Keepers.  Some news on the Scholls Ferry Road expansion and housing development.  Also mentioned that the Public Affairs Form will be held Mondays  at noon at the Peppermill.  If interested contact Eric.

Eric O. is on vacation this week and so is Wally.

NWBSC update via Bruce.  Just wrapped up the PAL Club Kids Camp.  Provided the Educational component as well as helmet fitting and skills rodeo course.  There were 50 kids on Tuesday and 52 on Wednesday.  Working on the August 24th Beaverton Banks and Beyond event.  If anyone is interested in volunteering you should contact me, Susan Nordstrom, and we'll put you in.

Raffle winner last week was Jack he donated to Dean Mitchell.  This week it was Bruce and he is donating his winnings to the Candlighters.

We celebrated Steve's birthday with a catchy tune he sang to us.

THPRD International Celebration/Car show this weekend.  Same event we helped out at years ago just a different name.  Also happening this weekend is the Air Show in Hillsboro and the Washington County Fair.

Bob A. put a plug in for Doug Hoy and the book gathering and transporting that will be the first Saturday of the month.  Meet at the library current location, load books up and move to their storage facility.  Bob was appealing to us to help out.  A pick up would be great but a car with a trunk, a bicycle, and even a skate board and backpack were mentioned as ways to move books.

Dick is doing Cycle Oregon this year.

And Michael gave an update on Barry saying he'd had a few set backs and issues with his shoulder and so he was going swimming in the mornings to try to help it out.

Have a great rest of the week and we'll see you next Thursday.

Notes from July 18

Good morning everyone,

A small group this morning but as always we had good times. Marv gave our invocation as Wally was unable to make it this morning.

Alan, Jack, Marv and Bob A. showed up last Saturday to chop wood. There are 3 cords. 1 cord is sold already per Bob A.

Jack brought in a presentation to deliver to Vern in the coming days, see attached photo. As you all know last night Vern and his late wife were honored at Shiffler Park. I sent out photos last night of the plaque on the rock in Shiffler Park in honor of Vern and his late wife Pat. Though he was overwhelmed you could see the happiness in his eyes.

The wood used on the frame was from a spruce tree that fell in Vern's yard a few years ago and Jack picked
up. It's a very nice tribute to Vern and Pat for all their work in the community all these years.

Kudos to Jack and all those involved in making this happen, it was a truly a wonderful moment last night! And Jack said that Vern had no idea until Doug Meneke called him up to the mic.

And lastly a thanks to the Hillsboro Club for coming to the ceremony last night.

Bob is going to the Hillsboro club next week.

Birthday's this week: Last Sunday the 14th was my birthday. Barry's birthday was on Monday and Tony Montez was on Tuesday. I opted to let everyone sing to me. And the restaurant brought me a pancake with a candle in the middle of it, photo attached.

Dick Schouten was with us this morning and gave an update on what his daughters have been up too. One is in Hartford, CT and works at Hartford General Hospital. The other has been working in Jakarta with the Armed German Government. She will be attending Columbia University this fall.

Eric O. was with us this morning and he said 3 weeks ago he was sick, last week he slept in and then he was on vacation. He's back this week and then heading out on a different vacation next week, so he will miss our morning meeting.

Eric also said some upcoming events in the city are:
* A car seat clinic @ Kuni Cadillac this weekend.
* Flicks by the Fountain starts up in August.
* Shred Event August 10th at Tectronics. Food donations are suggested.
* August 6th National Night Out.

Raffle winner last week was Steve this week was Jack.

Marv D. gave an update on the new police building. They will be staying at City Hall as all city offices will be moving to the Coldwell Banker Building at the Round. The hope is to expand out the current building and have parking underground. The building needs seismic updating. There will be a bond issue coming out in 2014.

Doug Hoy was with us again, he reminded us of Aloha Days that is coming up on August 16-17th. They are still looking for volunteers to help pack books, move them etc. If your interested please contact Doug at: dougho2@comcast.net

Our speaker today was Hannah who is Jack and Carol's granddaughter. She was a teacher in Taiwan. She has also been to Thailand. She said the kids are very disciplined there and everything is very structured. Everyday they would eat lunch at noon for 30 minutes and then that was followed up by a 30 minute nap. On the weekend activities were centered around the school such as track meets.

Hannah's big news was she is getting married in August. Congratulations!

Have a great rest of the week and we'll see you next week. Don't forget to check out our website: beavertonoptimist.webs.com

Just an FYI- The wood splitting that had been set for Saturday, tomorrow, has been postponed.  However if you are available Tuesday April 23 and April 24th Bob Arneson plans to be up at the Jenkins Estate starting at 8:30am to whenever they wear out.  If your able to come out and join please do so.

Update on the bulletin boards.  3 of the 4 are complete.  Jack was planning on gluing the largest of them together yesterday and today.  Then it will be time to install the soundboard.  He suggested we have a presentation to the Aloha Library at the breakfast meeting next Thursday.  Jack gave me, Susan, kudos for doing the intricate painting of the letters he routed out.  I spent 2 hours doing this process, very fun.  If you want to help Jack give him a call.

Wally passed around a poster for a fundraiser for Beaverton High School's Community Music Scholorship.  The West Side Singers will hold this concert.  If you want to purchase Tickets you can get them from Wally.   Program is May 11, 2013 at 7:30pm at Beaverton High School.  Pre ticket purchase is $ 8.00 for adults, $ 5.00 for Seniors 60+.  At the door $ 10.00 for Adults and $ 7.00 for seniors 60+.

This day in History 1989, Tianenmen Square Protests.

Our Speaker was Mark Creevy a volunteer for the special community measure for the Beaverton School Levy.  We had a spirited discussion on the matter.  The Beaverton School District is asking for 15 million a year over the next 5 years to keep on 150 teachers.  Mark explained that this money would stay in the community instead of going to Salem and then being allocated out to the communities.  A typical household will pay $ 24.00 a month.

See you all next week for our presentation of the bulletin boards to the Aloha Community Library and for a speaker Tom Collete, School Board Candidate

If you want to help with this project please give him a ring.  He hopes to be done by the end of next week.

Meeting notes March 28, 2013

We had a lovely breakfast this morning with a beautiful speaker.  Jocelyn Simpson, formally Jocelyn Taylor was here telling us about the PAL Club and all of the changes that are happening.  She also picked up a donation check from our club to the PAL Club

So the biggest change at PAL is, with great help from Police Chief Spalding and Mayor Denny Doyle, the PAL Club is going to be independent from the Portland PAL Club.  They have a new board of Directors, Bruce is on that board.  The PAL Club plans to be open over the Summer.  Currently there are about 50 kids coming daily for camp.

The PAL Club is doing a couple fundraisers.  One is coming up on April 13, 2013 at the Jenkins Estate from 6-10pm.  It is $ 75 a person, will be buffet style dinner, they have 50 auction items, they will be having a raffle and a wine pull.  I have attached a PDF for information on the Luau.  If you know someone who would like to attend please pass the flier on to them.

Jocelyn shared with us the kind of clubs at PAL Currently.  They have a Running Club, Homework Club, Hip Hop Dance twice a week.  And the biggest is the boxing team.  They have 2 national competitors this year.  One is a 15 year old female.  There are 82 members of the boxing team, the gym is open every night.  Jocelyn said their main focus is to get the kids into exercising as a way to deal with their stresses at home or in life in general.

We as a club could consider sponsoring the kids in an activity.  Bruce is sponsoring the kids so they can go to Mini-golf.

Bob A. thanked Bob P. for the updated roster.  I have attached this to this e-mail as well.

Bob A. hasn't heard from Dave in regards to libability in splitting wood, he is working on that.  Bob A. hopes that we can start splitting come April.

Jack picked up soundboard, he has all the supplies for bulletin boards.  Bob A. brought over a can of paint, however Jack discovered it was Enamel and wasn't sure if this would work.  Eric suggested we google what kind of paint to use.  Eric will look for a latex paint through Rebuilders Center connections.

Scott's birthday was yesterday. Happy Birthday Scott

Our Speaker next week is Cut Above Pawn Shop.  They will be bringing in a kit that tells how valuable gold is, so if you have ever been wondering how much your gold is worth bring it in.

And this day in History is 1969, Dwight Eisenhower passed away.

Don't forget the board meeting next Monday.  And for everyone else we'll see you next Thursday.

Don't forget too check out our website if you have questions on what is going on in our club, Wally has done a fantastic job with it.  http://beavertonoptimist.webs.com/

Also to keep up with the changes at PAL check them out on Facebook

Meeting notes and so much more!

Good morning everyone,

Just returned from a lovely meeting and thought I would write up the notes while they were still fresh in my head.  Hope for those that were unable to attend that you have a wonderful weekend.

First off, Susan went and hung out with Vern a couple days ago.  For those of you who are new to the club.  Vern is an original member of this club, he joined back in 1967 when the club was formed.  He and his lovely wife were married 70 years before she passed away last year.  He had been in the hospital in January for a bleeding ulcer and had lost a lot of blood of which he didn't realize.  He lost a bit of his stamina and sure could use visitors from the Optimist Club.  It was a pleasure to sit with him and listen to his stories.   He tries to walk around the newly opened park as well as he still is working in his yard.  I offered to walk with him if he ever wanted to go. We may want to consider as a club offering to go over and help him out in his garden, that is his pride and joy and I think his stamina isn't there to do what he really wants to do.

Also I sent out an e-mail last night, if you did not get it let me know.  It's in regards to the PAL Club Fundraiser for the Luau at Jenkins Estate on April 13th.  The e-mail has all the details.  Bruce posted it on his Facebook page and I sent it via e-mail, since I know not all my Optimist Club members do Facebook.  There is a $ 75.00 cost to get in, but it includes a full Luau dinner and beverage.  Plus it's for a great cause.

Alan has an infection in his leg and is in a lot of pain.  He's taking some pills that aren't working and is calling his doctor again today.  Said he has cellulitis, and due to not being able to walk his dogs are no longer loyal to him.  In fact they are pretty upset that they haven't been going on their daily walks.  Tony informed Alan that if it doesn't get cleared up he will have to have his leg amputated.

Last weeks raffle winner was Wally.  This weeks winner was Alan.

Kathy Jungles and Tony Montez were visiting from the Hillsboro Club this morning.  They have an exciting opportunity to help raise funds for our clubs.  There were mixed reactions in our club and so we will be discussing it at our up coming board meeting.   The jist is the Hillsboro Club is committed to 4 times a month and 8 people to serve food and dispense beer at the Concession stand at 4 different venues.  The games times are different and the season goes from September-August.  This is part of Foods for Funds Program.  They said it would be helpful if 4 of our members could join 4 of their members at whichever location 4 times a month to work the concessions booth.  Some of the venues were the Portland Meadows and Hillsboro Stadium  there were 2 others but I apologize for not getting all of them.  If you are interested in doing this, please come and share your thoughts at the Board meeting in a couple of weeks.

Jack spoke to Melinda at the Aloha Library regarding the bulletin boards.  He got all the sizes, he will be picking up the sound board and will schedule a time soon to have a work party in his shop at his house.

Jack also passed around pictures of his granddaughters birthday party and what fun they had.

Tony spoke of the Senior Rollers:  http://www.seniorrollers.com/  He spoke of a couple different rides coming up and the possibility of a new bike path through Beaverton.  He said they are also linked through the Washington County Visitors Association.

This day in history was 1963 and it was the year that Alcatraz closed it's doors.

Sally Fabre spoke to us as our very first speaker for the business of the month.  She has Agape Insurance: http://agapecommunityinsagency.com/

She handed out pads of paper, pens and a bracelet that says "Got Agape" on it.  Wally presented a certificate for the Business of the Month presentation and also gave her an application to fill out for Optimist Club, if she would like to join us in the future.  Thanks Wally for the wonderful speaker.

Sally also mentioned that a Baptist Church is moving into the old Bally Fitness Center across the parking lot from Peppermill.  They are going to use the basketball court to mentor young kids during the week and then on the weekends have their Sunday services there.

Wally passed around 2 fliers.  The first was for:

Here's what happened today, March 14, 2013

Good Morning everyone. Figured if I didn't write these up I'd surely leave something out. Great group of folks this morning.

Bruce brought fliers for the Beaverton, Banks and Beyond Bike Tour which will be held on August 24, 2013 starting at Papa's Pizza Parlor. Registration is currently open, they have an early offer for a NWBSC biking jersey as well. There annual budget right now is creeping up to $ 25,000. Thanked the Optimist Club for their donation.

Greg Cody joined us today he is on the THPRD Board as well as a neighbor to Marv Doty. Eric S. talked to him at coffee last night and suggested he come to check out the Optimist Club.

Bruce introduced Captain Eric Oathes of the Beaverton Police Department, he will take over where Terry Merritt left off as our liaison. Bruce has known Eric for sometime as they used to do cases together.

Alan asked Bruce if Captain Oathes had received a brochure to fill out, when Bruce said no that he had read in an e-mail provided by Alan, that he would have one ready this morning. Alan had to scramble a bit but the captain got his brochure to fill in.

Bob P. brought an updated roster, passed it around so people could make changes. Thank you Bob for doing this.

Dave said we need to move our shed. Bob P. said to call him that he would come over and meet Dave and go through the stuff in shed.

Raffle winner last week was Eric. He gave his winnings to the Dean Mitchell Scholorship Fund. Thank you for doing that. Raffle winner this week was Wally.

Linda Robinson came from the Hope Pantry, to let us know what they have been up to. Linda said that last year they gave out 5,500 food boxes. These food boxes give a family a 3 day supply of food. The Hope Pantry helped out 23,000 people last year. Said it's very rare for people to come weekly to the pantry. That often people come in just when the need arises.

They are looking for Volunteers. Here are their hours of operations in case you have a little time to spend at the Hope Pantry:

Bob P. talked about the amazing time he had at the Robotics fair this last weekend at the Memorial Coliseum. Said that this year the kids made robots that launched Frisbee's clear across the room. Something for our club to get involved in next year.

This day in History, 1997. Bill Clinton, while recovering from an operation, showed interest in picking up golf again.

Next week our speaker will be Sally Fabre, she is with the Aloha Business Association and our Optimist club speaker of the month. She works for Agape Community Insurance.

The week after that Joycelyn from PAL will be there.

Last but not least, have a great week everyone and we'll see you next week. Susan

Minutes from March 7

Out-of-town Bob returned from Maui. He was just in time to help induct his son Matt into our Club. His dad helped apply his pin while acting President Bob gave him certificates and paperwork to make it official. Matt helped with our cleanup at the Jenkins Estate while his father sunned himself in Hawaii. Matt has two little daughters five and two. He is a proud Beaver while his wife Sara is a Duck. He claims to clothe the girls in orange and black? He works at Intell and is planning on taking a sabbatical this summer so he will be available for lots of service projects? Matt and Bob Primrose  seemed overjoyed with the primroses they received and can’t wait to plant them.

Chaplain Wally took us back to 1776 with a puzzle named Sandy and offered to tell whether he was talking hurricanes only if his palm was crossed with shekels. He didn't charge for the prayer. President Bob began with a quick recap of Monday evening’s Board Meeting. We replaced Joe Coss, who left us for his Bend retreat, and asked Susan to take his place on the Board. Bob was still attempting to connect with Park & Rec’s. risk management to determine whether our wood splitting and firewood sales can continue at the Jenkins Estate. Jack stepped up to offer his expertise in building some bulletin boards for Aloha’s new library. Scott Thompson's wife just built one (I think to assign chores for Scott and his sons).  So he will help and Wally explained what sizes are needed and where they are to go. Bob Arneson is working with Fir Grove grade school on their cleanup service project scheduled for April 27th so keep this date open.

Bob has speakers lined up for the 21st…Sally Fabre (Aloha Business Association) and the 28th…Jocelyn (PAL Club) and next week we asked the Hope Pantry folks to send a representative to accept our donation for food or necessary supplies. Bruce Buffington has been appointed by Beaverton’s Police Chief to PAL’s new Board. Bruce will be bringing an officer to join our Club next week. We need to get a new application ready. See our Optimist calendar on our web site for correct speaker spellings.

Bob spent his last weeks raffle winnings on breakfast for speakers and Eric Squires, this morning’s speaker, will collect today’s pot of ½ $11.00. Wally claims the New York Provincial Congress ordered the Sandy Hook lighthouse to be dismantled on this day in 1776 so the invading British ships would crash on the rocks. The idea was devious but the British just installed new equipment so our plot was foiled. New Jersey and New York bickered over ownership of the lighthouse until the federal government assumed control of all lighthouses in 1787. In 1996 the Sandy Hook lighthouse, the oldest original lighthouse on the United States, passed into the jurisdiction of the National Park Service. It remains in operation as part of the Gateway National Recreation Area.

Eric Squires spoke to us about an Aloha Historical Society which he cleverly wrapped up with an audio visual demonstration with the latest inexpensive gadgets which could record our meeting’s proceedings and he explained how he did this with his CPO 6 meetings for which he is the honcho. They don’t just talk about land use nowadays. He is having a candidates' forum with folks running for the water board and the school district. His CPO is really a city club in disguise.

Besides being involved with the CPO he also got the wheels rolling in starting Aloha’s new library. And he belongs to the Aloha Business Association with our own Wally. He also is involved with the Washington County Museum and Beaverton Historical Society. Eric brought a friend with him, Anthony Mills, who is a sociologist with a degree in Poly Sci. who spent time in Russia and Micronesia. He likened Eric to Benjamin Franklin because he has so many interests and involved in so many things. We need both of these folks to join our club.

Eric offered to show any of our members how to operate this equipment and to put us in touch with “Free Geek” so we can build our own computers. (First I need to learn how to run my phone!) On behalf of the Club, Wally presented Eric with a children’s book, “It Happened on a Train” to be given to Aloha’s new library.
